For some, resort life might be appealing, but I prefer to make my own glamping setup and be right in the thick of the autumn smells and colors.
Nothing beats watching the sunrise glow through canvas walls while your partner sleeps peacefully beside you. The sound of leaves rustling in the breeze becomes your morning alarm clock, and coffee tastes better when you brew it in the mountains.
Fall offers something special that summer camping can’t match. The bugs are mostly gone, and the temps are perfect for getting close. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary or just want to reconnect, these couples’ glamping getaways never fail to ignite a spark.

Maybe you forgot ice back in town. Wink, wink. This will buy you some time to transform your glamping tent into the ideal cozy space.
For your romantic getaway, I highly recommend a yurt tent or bell tent from White Duck Outdoors. I’ve had one for years, and at this point, I like it better than any hotel or resort. They’re spacious and gorgeous, and the durable canvas lasts forever. More importantly, they provide the perfect foundation for romance. The natural materials and elegant design already create a cozy atmosphere.
Consider, for a moment, traditional camping. People come in and out of their tent, maybe they stay for a second to grab something, and then move on. When you’re glamping, the tent becomes the destination. The best way to separate traditional camping and a luxury setup is with some good rugs. Rugs, in the outdoors, are a bit out there. And they’re not for every occasion. For a romantic fall glamping getaway, they are a must.
Get a thick, plush rug beside the bed for bare feet. Add a smaller decorative rug near the entrance to place dirty shoes. Make sure you have a large area rug for the center of the space. While they’re relaxing, hike to your chosen spot with a canvas tarp and supplies for a forest picnic. Choose a grassy spot that’s flat where you can spread out. You can’t go wrong if there happens to be a babbling creek or majestic overlook. Either way, the spot should feel private, but don’t make it difficult to get there.
Canvas tarps are great because they’re soft to the touch, they match the outdoor setting, and if you spill a glass of wine on it, just rinse it off in the creek. I recommend packing a charcuterie board with some local artisanal cheeses, cured meats, dried fruits, and crackers. Add a thermos of hot cider or wine, depending on the temps and time of day.
Use some of the glamping tent accessories, like battery-powered lanterns or a small Bluetooth speaker for background music. Keep everything simple but thoughtful. I have been in love with Aspen trees for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my family had a cabin in Northern Utah in a canyon called Snake Creek, where Aspens grew plentiful and wild. Driving through the canyon, the leaves would change from golden to crimson to brilliant yellow and orange. I didn’t know it then, but when those copses of Aspen trees changed colors, it meant a new organism, a new grove of trees grown out of the same roots. These trees, Aspens, propagate by growing saplings out of their roots, each new trunk derived from the foundations of the older trees. These trees have a kind of mysticism about them, and it always emerges when love is near.
Research aspen groves near Colorado, Utah, and other northern regions. These places offer incredible opportunities in the fall to see the colors at their peak. Timing matters, since the best colors typically last only two to three weeks. I always check out Reddit or some local forums and blogs to find out when the best time to see the leaves is.
I walk through these natural cathedrals with my wife. The white bark and golden canopy are a stunning contrast against blue autumn skies. We take photos, languidly, without a need to hurry. Try not to spend the entire time behind a lens. I think it’s best to simply sit quietly and listen to the leaves dance in the breeze.
With the temperatures dropping, a thermos of hot chocolate or spiced cider only makes the scene better. Find a fallen log or spread a blanket for an impromptu picnic in a meadow.
There is a place, one of my favorite places I’ve ever been, in Utah, near Fishlake National Forest. It is a massive grove of aspen trees called Pando. This remarkable organism is a single living entity connected by underground root systems. Covering over 100 acres, Pando is considered one of the world’s largest living organisms. Think about that for a second. The largest living thing on earth. There’s something odd and romantic about being in the presence of something that immense.
Visiting Pando is always like stepping into a fairy tale. Getting there in the fall to see the synchronized color change across thousands of connected trees creates an otherworldly experience. I cannot recommend this place enough.
Glamping Tent Accessories for Fall Romance
Fall weather requires different layers and comforts than summer camping. The temperatures drop quickly after sunset, making warmth and coziness a little more difficult to acquire than on a hot summer night. Thinking ahead and getting some clever accessories will change your basic tent into a wildlife resort.
I know it’s camping, but make sure you get some quality bedding for the cooler nights. Flannel sheets are a must-have in cool temps, and I like to add extra wool or faux fur blankets for snuggling and lounging. Some people like portable heaters in the cold, but they’re really not for me. If you’re spending some longer stints of time inside, the body heat will eventually get average to a nice temperature. If folks are coming and going, though, or if it’s extremely cold, you’re going to need a heater. Keep them away from the tent walls and you’ll be good.
Pack extra batteries as well. Not only for your heater, but for your charging devices like speakers and a phone. If you get stuck in the tent because of the cold, you want to be entertained. I would keep in mind that the days get shorter in the fall, meaning you’ll rely on electric lighting for more hours of the day. Nothing ruins romance faster than stumbling around in complete darkness trying to find the bathroom.
Sunrise Serenity: Starting Perfect Days Together
I know everyone raves about the sunsets, but for me, the magic happens at Dan. It’s quiet then, the nocturnal animals aren’t coming out to hunt, and the bats aren’t swooping over your head. Not to mention the birds are singing and the crisp air cuts into the lungs, producing a better joy than a cup of joe.
Set up your glamping tent so the windows face east to catch the sunrise. Waking up with the sun is worlds better than a cacophonous alarm. Canvas walls glow with the soft morning sun, and the experience of the soft changing colors of dawn feels like a dream. It really is the best way to wake up in the wild.
I opt for a simple breakfast with ingredients from the night before. Also, try instant coffee, maybe some tea, and pre-made pastries, which require minimal effort but create opportunities to share a quiet morning ritual. For the colder months, get a small camping stove inside your yurt tent for brewing hot drinks without leaving your warm shelter. It’s an investment you won’t regret.
I move slowly in the morning and steadily wake up for an hour or so. I usually plan a short walk to a close viewpoint, stroll away from camp, and take in the singing birds, or simply sit with my wife in peace, considering the place and each other.
As a writer, I like to document these quiet moments with journal entries and snap a few memorable photos. Even if writing isn’t your thing, just a few thoughts about the moment will last for years to come. These mornings together are the memories I relive more than almost any other part of the trip.
Forever in a Photo, Always in Mind
The goal of romantic fall glamping extends beyond just having fun during your trip. It takes effort to document and preserve special moments you share together. And finding the right balance between experiencing and recording takes practice.
I always recommend bringing a real camera rather than relying solely on phone photos. Our phones are simply too connected to other avenues of our lives: work, social media, email, friends, family, bosses, co-workers, neighbors. The list goes on and on. This trip is about focusing solely on the person you’ve chosen to be with. Having a dedicated camera with the lens only pointed at them, and no surprise alerts, means something too. In today’s technological age, putting the phone aside to focus on someone is a sign of love and respect. Give it a try.
I’ll let you in on one more secret, and this one is a bit more personal. I keep a Cabinet of Curiosities at home full of keepsakes and tokens I’ve gathered over the years from different trips, hikes, and adventures I’ve been on with those I love.
