Classic Campfire Fun

What’s camp without the campfire? This is the most classic way to spend dinner, dessert, or an extra late-night get-together. Especially if people in your party had split off during the day, this is the time to reconvene, catch up, and hang out. A campfire is equally the best way to kick off your night, and the best way to end your night. Whichever you choose, here are some tips to make it extra special!

Our Best Campfire Tips

First of all, you’ve got to have a perfect fire setup! Keep your wood organized and dry with a canvas firewood log carrier. Then, select a decent spot– somewhere level. Start a small, manageable fire and let it grow from there. When you’re done, let it burn completely and thoroughly douse it. Ensure all burned items are scraped off and free of embers. This way, you’ll have a safe and clean fire. Remember to build fires responsibly, and check on fire restrictions. 

Fireside Activities

Okay, now it’s time for the fun part! Roast marshmallows to perfection and enjoy a belly-full of s’mores. Share riddles, play a round of charades, and tell your spookiest stories.

Games and Activities

Get the wiggles out before bed! Play some active games with flashlights, headlamps, and lanterns around the campsite. Here are a couple of our favorites:

Flashlight Tag

It’s the laser tag of the campground! Designate boundaries around your campsite. Then, whoever wants to be “it” first gets the flashlight. Other players will hide while the tagger counts to 20. Then, the tagger uses the flashlight to search for and tag other players. They must hold the light on them and call out their name to tag them as “it”. Here’s more detailed rules. This may not be the best game to play if your campground has quiet hours. So be mindful of your neighbors. Remember to set the game boundaries within your personal campsite, too, so you don’t get too carried away and end up in someone else’s campsite! 

Glow Stick Sculptures

What better way to enjoy the dark than with colorful glow sticks! Time to put a little competitive spin on arts and crafts! Using various glow sticks and connectors, make your best glow stick creations. Make it a challenge by drawing words and trying to create those images! Use a small, board-game hourglass to put a time limit on it!

Reading, Journaling, and Relaxing

Sometimes it’s good just to keep it lowkey. Every good camping trip deserves an equally good book. Grab yours, cuddle up, and spend a cozy quiet night immersed in a story. Make time to reflect in your journal, reimagine your surroundings in a sketchbook, and enjoy your creative quiet time.

Movie Night

This one is kind of breaking the whole “unplugging” rule of camping. But it definitely feels like a treat! You can pre-download a movie and project it onto the side of your tent for a home-made sleepover vibe. Or, bring a portable DVD player (old school style). Just remember to bring headphones and respect the campground’s quiet hours.

Stargazing is often the highlight of so many camping trips. Especially is you find yourself in a designated Dark Sky park, you’re in for a real treat! Cozy up and get to know the cosmos with these helpful tips and tricks.

Choosing a Location: Light Pollution and Weather

Quality stargazing will rely heavily on your location. Most likely, if you’re deep in the outdoors at a campground, you’ll be able to see some great stars! But light pollution is tricky to avoid. For spectacular night sky views, look into camping at a designated Dark Sky. You could even download a light pollution map to help you find the best viewing spot near you. Check the forecast! Anything from clouds, fog, and even mist, can mess with visibility. Try to shoot for a crisp, clear night. 

Get Comfy!

When you’re laying back staring at the stars, you know you’ve got to get comfy! Bring camp chairs that recline, or pull the sleeping mats out. After all, you’re going to be staring at the sky for an extended period of time. It’s better for your neck, back, and shoulders to be more horizontal. The temperature is only going to drop at night, so cuddle up in your blankets, and lay your head on a pillow. 

Let Your Eyes Adjust Naturally

Stargazing is a screens-off, lights-off kind of activity. Once you’re all set up, allow some time to let your eyes adjust. For at least half an hour, don’t use any light (even a headlamp or flashlight). Of the billions of stars in our galaxy, the naked eye can only see about 4,000 stars. Use binoculars or telescopes to expand that range. Let your eyes fully adjust, and try to soak up as much as you can!
