The United States has many camping locations that have a variety of beautiful landscapes and parks that you can choose from. From the sandy beaches to state parks, allow us to share some recommendations of some of the best campsites around the US that are worth the road trip!
Minnewaska State Park Reserve
Minnewaska State Park sits on the Shawangunk Ridge just 94 miles from New York City. It is over 2000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rocky terrain. The park is quite spacious, which allows activities like hiking, biking, or even enjoying the view. You can make reservations at the Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Campground. You can make these reservations online only at the beginning of March every year as it is closed during the winter season. Many places offer camping tents for sale throughout the year and with over 50 tent sites that include walk-in sites and drive-in sites, you have several options for choosing canvas tents for your trip. Additional amenities that this place offers also include coin-operated showers, communal fire pits, Wi-Fi, and picnic pavilions.
Acadia National Park
Known for being the natural gem of the Pine Tree State, you can find the Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. The park consists of 158 miles of hiking trails, 24 ponds and lakes, and around 50,000 acres of forest, all of which come together to offer a scenic backdrop for your camping adventures. When reaching this location, you will also find four campgrounds to set up your tent. These places include Seawall with fewer tourists, Duck Harbor on Isle au Haut, Schoodic Woods on Schoodic Peninsula, Blackwoods near Bar Harbor, and Wildwood Stables which are only available to guests with stock animals. Keep in mind that you will need to reserve your campsite online two months ahead of time. The campgrounds in the Acadia National Park open seasonally for spring, summer, and fall and then close up around the winter months.
Assateague Island National Seashore
About 9 miles from the south of Ocean City, Maryland, the Assateague Island National Seashore campgrounds has over 30 miles of beaches for camping, surfing, swimming, crabbing, kayaking, spotting wild horses, paddle boarding, and so much more. Although the Assateague Island National Seashore is located in both Virginia and Maryland, the camping grounds are only available on the Maryland side. Additionally, campers are not allowed to bring any firewood from out of Maryland and if they want to bring pets along for the trip, they will need to make sure that they are up to date on all of their shots and sign an agreement regarding pet policies.
Big Bend National Park
If you are looking for a place that is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and rafting, you will find all your needs met at the Big Bend National Park along the Rio Grande in Texas. The park also offers trails along its mountain, rivers, and desert landscapes for backpacking or hiking. You can also find an RV camping area, developed campgrounds, and multiple opportunities when it comes to backcountry camping. You can also choose to make use of tent cabins in this location and all you have to do is make reservations in advance, including backcountry permits which are required for any river trips.
Sawtooth National Recreation Area
When you come across the Smoky Mountains, you will see tons of stunning views that would look straight out of a Bob Ross painting. And out of the dozens of campgrounds, you will find on that 756,000-acre land, the best spot is none other than the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. If you are someone who is into several kinds of camping activities, then this place is ideal for you. It offers its campers fantastic places to go fishing, cycling, hiking, rafting, and so much more. However, you will need to make reservations ahead of time online as half of their sites are only available on a first come first served basis. If you are planning a camping trip to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the best time to visit would be during the camping season that takes place from late May to mid-September each year.
Glacier National Park
With over 1,000 sites and 13 developed campgrounds, Montana offers the world the magnificent Glacier National Park where you can get tons of opportunities to bask in the beautiful views of Montana. It is also a great place for hikers who have the option of enjoying more than 700 miles of trails that go through meadows, forests, and beautiful mountain terrains. Many campers make use of a yurt tent to get the most out of their camping experience during the winter months. Many of the campgrounds at the Glacier National Park are available on a first come first served basis, while for some of the others, you will need to make reservations. Usually, you can visit the Glacier National Park all year round but most of their main camping seasons happen around spring through fall every year.
Arches National Park
People consider the sight of waking up on a cold morning to see the snow set against the red rocks to be one of the best things to experience in the Arches National Park. Known for one of its popular hikes, the Delicate Arch Trail takes people on an amazing trek with beautiful scenery. One thing to keep in mind is that the Arches only has one campground called the Devil’s Garden, which offers 51 campsites. You can, however, choose to find other places to camp near the Moab area. The Arches National Park requires reservations for stays, around early March and late October due to the park’s size and the number of people who tend to visit the place during the busier months. Campsites are available on a first come first served basis from early November to late February.
Grand Canyon National Park
If you are looking for stunning views on your camping trip, then there is no place like the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The place is huge so there are a lot of campsites you can visit in the Grand Canyon. The South Rim can be the easiest place to get to, but if you are not good with crowds, it is best to seek other options. For example, if you are looking for a secluded stay, you can try visiting the North Rim. Just keep in mind that it will take about four more hours to reach it from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It has been recommended to make reservations for two out of their three developed campgrounds during the summertime. You can also opt for backcountry camping as long as you have a permit for it. The North Rim Campgrounds are open seasonally from May to October, while other sites are open all year round, including places in the South Rim such as the Tailor Village and the Mather Campground.
Olympic National Park
The Olympic National Park resides in Washington, offering camping next to aesthetically pleasing coastlines that are marked by several sea stacks. The park has over 10 different campgrounds with some of them near the ocean while the others near a rainforest, allowing campers to enjoy a variety of landscapes during their trips. It is also recommended to go on the park’s website before planning your trip to see if there are any weather-related or seasonal closures. Similar to most camping sites, the Olympic National Park also reserves their spot on a first come first served basis, although you can choose to reserve a spot ahead of time during the summer at the Kalaloch, Hoh Rain Forest, and Mora campgrounds. This also includes other places such as the Log Cabin Resort RV & Campground, and Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort RV Park and Campground.
Ozark-St. Francis National Forests
A lot of people overlook the countryside of Arkansas. But if you take a closer look, you will find that in the Ozark-St Francis National Forests, there are over 1 million acres of recreational space, many lakes and streams, nine beaches, and more than 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Additionally, campers can choose between several campgrounds for RV and tent camping. This includes places like the Blanchard Springs Recreation Area, Redding, and Cove Lake, which are open all year round. You can also find other campgrounds there, such as Storm Creek, Shores Lake, Long Pool, and Lake Waddington, which are open seasonally from May till October.
