When it comes to camping, coziness is key. A huge part of curating a good “vibe” at your campsite depends on the ambiance you create with the lighting. Whether you are setting up a rustic backcountry camp, or camping with other folks at an established campsite, we’ve got some transformational camping lighting ideas that can be incorporated creatively anywhere.

For a Soft, Ambient Glow

If you’re the type that likes to maintain the natural glow of the night or want to create a serene and relaxing environment, you’ll want to use soft lighting methods. We love string lights because they can be used in so many ways to obtain the ambiance you’re after. Here are a few unique camp lighting solutions you can achieve with string lights:

Flameless Candles & Fairy Lights

Fairy lights and flameless candles in mason jars work wonders for the ambiance of a primitive campsite. Flameless, battery-operated candles, because we are not trying to start a forest fire, here! You can find flameless candles at your local hobby/craft store or most big box stores. Drop small battery-operated tea lights down into mason jars to create a rustic lantern look. You can use these mason jar lanterns as picnic table centerpieces, safe mood lighting inside your tent, or placed about the perimeter of the campsite for a little extra visibility. Fairy lights are super fun decorations when it comes to birthday camping trips!  

Battery-operated fairy lights are a great way to elevate the nighttime vibe of your campsite. You can string them from tree branches to create the magical illusion of low-hanging stars or drape them from the entrance of your tent for soft, functional light.

String Lights

String lights are a camper favorite because they offer a practical, efficient light source but also bring a warm, cozy effect to their environment. String lights come in many shapes and forms these days, from solar-powered to battery-operated lights, you don’t even need an electricity source to bring the magic to your campsite. 

Tent Lighting

String lights can be used inside your family camping tent to create a soft glow. They’re perfect for setting a calming tone for relaxation at the end of a long, active day. You can hang them along the ceiling to create the illusion of stars or outline your tent’s floor perimeter for a more targeted glow.

Pathway Markers

It’s helpful to use string lights along walkways, to/from your tent, and/or surrounding the campsite. String lights are easy to secure with stakes or rocks, and are just bright enough to illuminate any obstacles in front of you without taking away from the light of a campfire or the moon.

Lanterns are versatile– they can be portable light sources for nighttime excursions, or they can be set on tabletops at mealtimes. They are consistent and reliable and you won’t always need batteries on hand to power them!

Lanterns can offer a rustic feel to any modernized glamping tent, transferring the cozy feeling of traditional camping to even the fanciest yurt or bell tent setup.

Solar-Powered Garden Lights

Solar-powered lights are extremely convenient for modern camping. Solar lights are not only eco-friendly but also ideal for extended camping trips as they do not require any electricity source besides the sun. Solar garden lights are super easy to set up and come in a wide range of shapes and setups, from stake lights to hanging lanterns or string lights. Solar lights are great for all-night use after storing up their charge all day while the sun’s out. They’re made to be extremely durable for outdoor use, meaning they can withstand rain, wind, rough handling, and in some cases, extreme cold. 

Battery-Powered Spotlights

Spotlights are really helpful for task completion after dark. They’re bright and great for illuminating large areas of your campsite. Spotlights are typically very adjustable which means you can aim their light straight at the area that you want to be lit up, whether it’s the cooking area, tent entrance/exit, or social gathering space. 

Spotlights help keep your camp secure in remote areas where grizzlies, mountain lions, or wolves might be close by. This way, with spotlights, you can hopefully spot wildlife or other hazards from further away and stay prepared. 

Glow-in-the-Dark Accents

Glow-in-the-dark fun isn’t just for kids! Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, holiday, or other special occasion or not, glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark paints, tape, and stones are an easy and cost-efficient way to bring excitement to any camping trip.

Glow Sticks & Bracelets

This is an obvious one, but we simply HAVE to talk about good ol’ glow sticks and bracelets. These days, they make all types of glow sticks for all occasions. Fourth of July glow sticks are a favorite with my crew both young and old. Classic glow sticks come in all colors, big enough to wear as bracelets or necklaces and to string together like chain links and use as decoration in themselves. Glow sticks are great ways of keeping track of everyone’s whereabouts around camp (especially dogs and kids) after the sun goes down.

Glow Tape for Tents

Glow tape is a fun tent accessory, too. You can decorate your tent and everyone else’s if group camping, maybe even give them all a distinct design so that you can identify your shelter even when it’s pitch black dark out. Line your tent entrances/exits and zippers with glow tape, too, to keep from having to fumble around to find them.

For functionality and safety, wrap glow tape around your tent guy lines to keep from tripping over them in the dark.

Glow Stones

Glow stones are extremely neat, crafty ways to illuminate your campsite. Glow-in-the-dark stones are made of materials (like strontium aluminum or zinc sulfide) that absorb the sun’s rays during the daytime, and emit them softly after dark. You can even purchase glow-in-the-dark gravel for lining campsite pathways if you want to get really serious about seeing where you’re going at night. One could argue that this counts as “Leaving It Better Than You Found It.”

Practical Lighting Tools for Safety

Headlamps… With Glow in the Dark Bands

Headlamps are important to have for portable, hands-free lighting for safely completing tasks around the campsite at night. It’s important to leave your hands free for cooking, setting up your tent, or hiking at nighttime. Headlamps are also great for personal visibility to other campers.

Other helpful headlamp features include red light settings. Red lights preserve your instinctual night vision while still providing enough light to illuminate your tasks. Red lights are also non-invasive to wildlife!

Motion Sensor Lights

Motion sensor lights are a great safety measure for the campsite as well as an effective lighting solution. They can be placed around your tent so that they will come on and off when people or animals are nearby. This is a good warning for inhabitants of the tent who can’t see out at night. Motion sensor lights offer quick visibility when moving in and out of the tent for various reasons. 

Reflective Markers

While not exactly “light fixtures” themselves, reflective markers are a creative way to channel light around your campsite. Place reflective markers on your vehicles, tents, or even trees around the campsite perimeter to keep from running into such obstacles at night and causing damage or injuries. As we all know, human depth perception in the dark is not great! Help yourself out with some simple reflective stickers.

Portable Safety Beacons

These nifty little tools are great for those who enjoy the occasional night hike or solo excursion. In case of emergency, these compact, bright, battery-powered light beacons can put off a distress signal. If you get lost, you can mark your location with the light beacon so rescuers can easily see you from long distances away.
